This year again Canarian cheeses have done well in the World Cheese Awards, part of a wider International Cheese Festival which is recognized as the most important in the world for cheese producers. After last year's brilliant performance in San Sebastían in the Basque Country, where 48 out of 97 Canarian entries won prizes, up from 15 awards in 2015, this year's ceremony in London saw 36 cheeses from these islands named as among the best in the world.

Of the Canarian entries, indeed, four were awarded "supergold" medals: a couple of dairies in Gran Canaria won three of them but the fourth, for a cured goats cheese with oregano, went to Adeje's now world-famous Quesería Montesdeoca based in Tijoco Alto. In addition, Canarian cheeses won seven gold, nine silver, and 15 bronze medals, with 16 awards in total going to Gran Canaria, ten to Tenerife, seven to Fuerteventura and three to Lanzarote. Quesería Montesdeoca, however, was the most successful Canarian dairy of all with a total of nine awards.
