Thanks Janet. It puzzled me because I know we've discussed it somewhere but I couldn't find the thread. Ah well, it's here now.

The problem with "new" legislation is that it's updated by means of additional clauses, so the original law is still what turns up in searches, while the recent laws or amendments are in one redaction ...

I mean I couldn't find the thread on ChalkCat where you were explaining the 1.5 m thing to me and Myrtle  :D. Logic says it should be this one but it isn't here.

I would love to see the Police law instructors explaining this law to the Police Officers. How the hell does one judge 1.5m? The first thing I would do is to get the officers eyes checked. I would hope the slightest defect in depth perception would render the officer incapable of applying this law!

Question, how does a cyclist negotiate a road where, with cars parked on both sides, the free road in the center is less than 3m? :undecided:

In your example the cars are parked so would this be considered 'overtaking' or 'filtering' ? If the later then this is no problem as I believe the law applies to overtaking (correct me if I'm wrong)

Or maybe the law only applies when the slower vehicle is actually moving?

Why can't I find the bit about cars having to leave 1.5m gap when overtaking bicycles?  :017:

I witnessed an interesting twist on this part of the law today when a motorcyclist came to pay a fine of €200 for not leaving 1.5m distance when overtaking waiting cars.

Another (motor?)cyclist has been fined for not leaving the required distance between himself and a car  :great:  Why do they never catch the idiot bikers that slice past me??

That I don't understand. In my biking days I tried to keep well away from cars.
